So I've been testing out this new "keyboard" app on the Nokia 5800 for awhile and so far I'm fairly impressed with it.
Basically it's a new method to type on your phone, instead of clicking/tapping individual letters, just keep on sliding your finger/stylus till you cover all the letters of the word.

To download you will have to go to the developer's site here and input your name, email and IMEI. They will then send you the application to try.

X-Plore - a file manager/browser/editor for s60v5 phones

I truly can't imagine why I had completely ignored to put this app up here for people to download. It is one of the 1st apps that I started using on my 5800.

This file manager is pretty much an all in one solution. With features like an inbuilt document viewer, audio/video player, quick thumbnails for pictures, zip manager, etc...it is by far the most superior app in it's category.

It also lets you access system files where you can use it to delete cache/temp files to free up more space on the phone memory. Just be careful not to delete any essential system files.

Look at the pictures for the app's capabilities and functionality. The last 2 images also show you how to switch between different keyboard skins, however I personally love the Opera Keyboard interface. Another neat feature is that the keyboard automatically switches to the larger one once the phone is rotated to the landscape mode.

I recently moved to New York City and was completely clueless about getting around this place. Thankfully for this iMetro app, I was able to navigate the subway lines.

This app compiles subway maps from metro cities all over the world such as London, NYC, Toronto, etc..
I quite like the usability as well, single click to zoom in/out and drag to pan the map.
Dislikes: No possible way to go back to chose another map. You have to quit the app and start over.

Note: Make sure to install this to the memory card, since it takes up over 15 Mb.

Opera Mini 5 Beta Browser- Absolutely awesome!

So I've been testing out this new Opera mini 5 beta browser for the past couple of days and it's just amazing!

Comparing it to the native Symbian browser is a waste of time because Opera beats it in all aspects. Take a look below at the features I found most useful:

Visualized saved bookmarks on the Home page like in Google Chrome.
Multi tabbed browsing, with no hindrance in performance with open tabs.
Uses it's own keyboard, which is so easy to use compared to the mini qwerty in symbian. In the video I am using my fingers to type and as you can see it's very fast and effective.
Fast scrolling and browsing.
I am sure there's more but I haven't probably discovered them!

Now before you get too excited about having a free pulse meter, let me explain how it works.
Find a pulse on yourself, radial/carotid/femoral etc and then each time you feel a pulse press on the screen. Make sure you do atleast 5 to 10 pulses to get a good estimate of your heart rate.

I truly apologize for putting you guys through Ziddu.com to download the files. It has countless horrendous popups and scripts that try to waste your time with unnecessary clicks.

So I've decided to change where I host the uploaded files from here on. The 2 that I've narrowed down to are the following:

Mediafire - Clean interface, no waiting time and one click downloads.
Uploading - Clean interface, 30 sec waiting time but for every 1000 downloads I get $20.

Now I was seriously bummed out when I found out that the Nokia N97 had a built-in compass and the Nokia 5800 didn't.

Thankfully, some smart developer has come up with this useful app for us Nokia 5800 users.
To use, just point towards the sun and it will show you the bearings. I agree it's not the coolest of apps, but if lost in the jungles this app sure would be useful.

I had reviewed/posted Shazam earlier which is by far the most popular music identifying tool out there for pretty much all platforms.
However, here is another app that does the same: Midomi.

The app installs as a trial version however none of the features were restricted and I couldn't find a time limit on its use. So as far as I can tell its free for use so give it a try!

How to sign unsigned apps for Nokia s60v5 phones.

Here's sort of a walk-through to get you all setup to sign unsigned apps and then be able to install them on your phone.

Now there are many websites that let you sign up to get cert & key, However I've had the best return time with this site: http://cer.s603rd.cn/
Click on the thumbnail for a larger view.

For people who don't mind waiting and don't want to deal with the Chinese site mentioned above, there's this website: http://www.s60certkey.com/ that lets you do the same. However, since this site piggyback's on another service it'll take awhile before you get your cert & key.

Once you have your cert & key, transfer them to a folder on your phone (I keep mine on the memory card, but it honestly does not matter).

Download Free Signer here. And install to your phone.
Run the app and go to 'Settings', Where it says 'Sign Cert' and 'Sign Key' browse and find the cert & key respectively.

Now you are ready to sign apps, Simply 'Add Task' and navigate to the unsigned app. Make sure that when you 'Add' the app you select Sign sis and Self Sign sis. Then click Go and you will have your signed app.

I believe this should be it. If you need any more clarifications Please let me know.

Here's the famous Light Sabre application for s60v5 phones. I believe this is a must have app for all Star Wars fans out there...

For those who don't know what this application is, you definitely have to give it a try. It uses the phone's accelerometer to gauge movements and makes swinging noises like the Light Sabres from the Star Wars movies. Additional, options like 'powering up/down' the sabre, different colors etc make the application fun to use.

I found this Google Translate widget at one of the forums for s60v5 phones and I've got to admit, it's a pretty neat app to have on your phone.

This is version 2 of the app, with a better interface and landscape support.
I'm hoping to see future versions with added support for more languages.

Photo browser is another application to be derived from the minds over at Nokia Beta Labs.

This update brings some pretty neat features such as 3D scrolling as seen in Cooliris plugin for Firefox.

Here's some of the basic functionality:

Touch gestures to scroll through pictures.
Double tap to open & zoom, double tap again on zoomed in picture to zoom out.
Touch and hold to bring up magnifier.
Single tap to return to pan view.

This app has been around for awhile, however I do believe it is the only calculator that allows for handwriting input.

I came by this app on a forum and was immediately interested. Gladly it was released as a freeware and so here it is for your downloading pleasures.

With a neat iPhone app like interface this app lets you calculate your BMI and see whether you are healthy or not. Conveniently, the developer has also included the info to gauge where your BMI fits in.

Transport Tycoon for Nokia 5800 & Nokia N97!!

For those who haven't played this game, this was by far one of the most challenging and amazing games created back in the 90's. I believe it was originally created to run on DOS (which was what I played it on) then was ported to Windows.

Eventually, came out Open TTD an open source free version of the game which improved upon the game graphics and AI. And now it's finally here to be run on the Symbian OS.

Follow these steps to get the game up & running on your phone:

Download and unzip the file to your desktop (Kind off obvious, I know)
Copy all the .sis and .sisx to your phone and start installing them, the order doesn't matter.
Finally copy data.rar to your phone and place it in E:\openttd\data\ directory.
Run the game and go to Advanced Setting>Interface>Interaction>Left-click scrolling and make it to green /on.
Enjoy!!

SmartCam, Turn your Nokia 5800 into a Webcam!

Here's another awesome freeware application for today!!

SmartCam, comes bundled with a client for your PC and your Nokia S60v5 phone.

Steps to get it running:

Install SmartCam_v1_3.exe on your PC.
Install SmartCamS60v5_v1.3.sisx on your phone.
Startup SmartCam on your PC and go to File>Settings to make sure that the TCP/IP (Wifi) option is checked. Then keep the client running and proceed to the next step.
Start SmartCam on your phone and go to Options>Connect where it will ask you for your server name. Here you will need to type in your PC's IP address. For most people it will be in the order of 192.168.X.XXX (You will be able to get the IP from your router settings).
That's it, your webcam should be up and running now!

Note: The bluetooth option does not work for now. You can fiddle around with it at your own risk, when I tried it froze my phone!

Also, you can use this webcam feature for multiple applications such as MSN, Yahoo, AIM etc, just make sure you change your device to SmartCam in each of these chat messengers.

This is by far one of my favorite applications for the Nokia 5800 and I rate it a 10/10.

It allows you to use your phone as a GPS tracker and cacher for your workout activities.

In the video you will see a brief demonstration of the app, then a clip of an exported workout to Google Earth and lastly the the workout uploaded to Nokia's Sport Tracker website.

Touch Piano is a freeware which basically offers the functionality of full piano to play on your phone.
This app comes with a lot of customizable options and skins, However in my honest opinion it's not the best at registering touch and there seems to be a lag between pressing a key and hearing the sound.

Nokia Ovi Maps 3.0

Yes, I know this isn't exactly news however for those who haven't updated Nokia Maps 2.0 to Ovi Maps 3.0 here's a quick way to do so.

1) Go here and download the latest client available for your phone.

2) Nokia 5800 users will be prompted to download and install Maps Updated, which is a PC client that will remove the old maps and software before installing the newest Ovi Maps 3.o.

3) Click here to download the Map Loader and after installing load away the needed maps.
